Who is Kehinde James?
Meet Kehinde James, a rising star in Nigeria's aerospace engineering landscape. Fresh from the halls of Lagos State University, James represents the next generation of innovators pushing the boundaries of flight and space exploration.
Born and raised in the vibrant metropolis of Lagos as one of seven siblings, her journey into the complex world of aerospace engineering speaks to the growing presence of STEMsational talent in STEM fields.
How did you choose to pursue this field?
As a child, I always wanted to know how aircrafts fly; I was curious. So I went about telling everyone that I was going to become a pilot.
As I grew, I found out that I was becoming interested in engineering. It was challenging, and I loved to challenge myself. I still couldn’t stop thinking about aircrafts, so I went on Google to see if there were any courses that I could study which were a combination of the two things I was obsessed with. I found Aeronautical Engineering, and this made me so happy that it was actually a thing.
Luckily for me, schools in Nigeria had started to offer the course, so I applied for it and I got accepted.
Did you always have the desire to work in this field?
Yes, it was either aviation or nothing for me.
What do you love most about your job?
I love how it challenges me and also the endless knowledge.
What tips would you offer for anyone thinking about entering into your profession?
Be persistent and stay focused.
What advice would you give your younger self about your career journey as a "woman of color" working in a predominantly white, male-dominated field?
Never think anything is impossible to do.
Thrive with a growth mindset.
Can you provide some words of wisdom to young ladies considering entering a STEM field as a career choice?
You can do anything as long as you set your mind to do it.
Put yourself out there and let people know of your capabilities.
What is your favorite Quote? How do you apply this to your life?
I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.
What are some interesting facts about yourself that you would like to share?
I love to dance whenever I get the chance to, and as shy as I can be, I never turned down any opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
