Understanding Patterns in Math and Nature

Patterns are all around us - in the numbers we count, the shapes we see, and the natural world we explore. Recognizing patterns is a key STEM skill that helps us make sense of our surroundings and predict what might happen next. In this post, we'll explore what patterns are, find them in nature, and engage in fun activities to practice this important concept.

What are Patterns?

A pattern is a repeated sequence or design. You might already know some simple patterns like "ABAB" (red block, blue block, red block, blue block) or the numbers "1, 2, 3, 4, 5". Patterns can be found in shapes, colors, numbers, and more.

Patterns in Nature

Nature is full of amazing patterns. Next time you're on a walk, see how many you can find:

  • Seasons: The cycle of winter, spring, summer, and fall is a pattern.

  • Day and Night: The sun rising and setting each day is a 24-hour pattern.

  • Moon Phases: The changing shapes of the moon in the sky follow a pattern.

  • Trees: The branching of some trees follows a pattern.

Fun STEM Activities

  • Nature Walk: Take a walk and have your child find and draw the patterns they see in nature.

  • Pattern Blocks: Use wooden or plastic blocks in different shapes and colors to create and extend patterns.

  • Number Patterns: Write a number sequence (like 2, 5, 8, 11, 14) and have your child guess the next few numbers.

  • Art Patterns: Create a piece of art using a repeated pattern of shapes and colors.

Patterns are a fascinating part of math and nature. By recognizing and creating patterns, kids can develop problem-solving skills and better understand the world around them. Try these activities and see the patterns you can find!

Questions for Discussion

  • What is your favorite pattern to draw or create?

  • Can you think of a pattern you follow each day?

  • How do patterns help us in our lives?

Extension Activity

Create a "Pattern of the Day". Each day, come up with a new pattern and challenge your child to repeat it and guess the next part.
